The SPPHAV offers a placement program for Standardbred horses that are seeking new homes after having retired from harness racing; failed the grade as a harness racer; or, for some other reason need a new home. This program is for the placement of horses that otherwise could end up at the knackery. Our reward is the knowledge that horses securing a new home, with our assistance, receive the opportunity of a second life - a life after racing.
The SPPHAV will also act as a collector of information on pleasure horses that are for sale, for $1,000 or less, but the emphasis of our efforts will be concentrated on finding homes for horses off the track.
While the SPPHAV receives no payment for these services, people wanting to come onto the program with the view to securing a horse are required to pay a $20 handling fee. On receipt of this handling fee and the person wanting a horse form, you will receive contact details for all horses on the program and will also be registered as an Associate Member of the SPPHAV for 12 months. Being an Associate Member, you will receive copies of the bimonthly SPPHAV newsletter.
Horses offered for placement, straight off the track, will have been well handled; will float without problem; may have been ridden; but will (usually) have little to no saddle education. It is safe to say that horses offered to this program are normally those with the easy going temperament that those of us who know the breed, know and love so much.
Sometimes horses off the track have a low price attached to them. Owners will do this to ensure the horse is moving on to someone who is going to look after it appropriately. Some horses are offered on a free lease basis with the view to the transfer of ownership once the original owner is satisfied the horse is in a secure environment. This is often the case with horses with high winnings and / or that cost a significant sum when purchased as a yearling.
There are several members, within the SPPHAV, who offer basic saddle education services. Their names and contact information will be provided to any person taking a horse, through this program, and who requires their horse to be saddle educated for them. There will be a cost - negotiated between the two parties - attached to this.
Owners and trainers wishing to place a horse through the SPPHAV are invited to call our Secretary or you can print out the "horse available" form, from this site and send it in to us.
People seeking a horse through the SPPHAV are invited to call our Secretary or you can print out the "person wanting a horse" form, from this site and post it to us with the $20 handling fee.
The SPPHAV maintains a listings of horses that are seeking a new home and of people looking for a horse. Prospective new owners are put in contact with current owners, to discuss the horse and make arrangements to see the horse to determine if it is suitable. Negotiations remain between current and prospective owners; the SPPHAV takes no part in this process.
Free horse registration with the SPPHAV is offered to any person who provides a new home for a horse that has recently retired from harness race training or racing so long as they upgrade their associate membership to a full membership (family, single or junior).
People who have a horse, that is not immediately retired from racing, for sale (or lease, or other) and who wish to use the SPPHAV as an agency for passing this information on to prospective new owners are invited to call or email the Secretary or you can print out the "horses available" form, from this site.
These horses are not eligible for free registration with the SPPHAV and we recommend owners also advertise the horse through normal channels, including Horse Deals and The Weekly Times.
To transfer ownership (on our books) of horses already registered with the SPPHAV, a Horse Transfer fee - along with a full membership fee - from the new owner, is required.
